None other than Prime Minister Dr Lawrence Gonzi himself made, certainly unwillingly, the most convincing argument in favour of the introduction of responsible divorce legislation when he stated that “there will be the need for divorce to be introduced in future but not now”!
Dr Gonzi’s statement demolished at one go, all the scaremongering arguments made by the anti-all-kinds-of-divorce movement! Because if even responsible divorce legislation “would undermine the permanence of stable marriages”, as the anti divorcists claim, it should also have the same effect in future, when, according to Dr Gonzi, divorce becomes a necessity!
Once the Prime Minister seems convinced that marital problems would have increased so much in the foreseeable future that the introduction of divorce legislation becomes imperative, surely that argument proves the contrary. It would be much more responsible to tackle the escalating problem of broken marriages today rather than waiting for an undefined tomorrow! The thousands of separated people who are suffering today can’t wait for a tomorrow which may never come!
