Waterpolo – Bank Of Valletta winter league - Teams battle for semifinal berths

Malta Independent Sunday, 3 April 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

The Bank of Valletta winter league continues this morning at the Tal-Qroqq Pool with three matches.

From now on, the top five clubs will be aiming to finish in the top four as these will be contesting the semifinal phase.

At present, only four points separate the leaders, Neptunes, from fifth placed Sliema. However, the latter, as well as Sirens and Exiles have played a match fewer.

Neptunes have eight points from four matches, San Giljan six points from four games, Sirens six from three, Exiles and Sliema four from three and Marsascala have no points at all.

In today’s matches, Sliema must win against San Giljan if they are to retain their hopes of finishing among the top four. A defeat will be a major setback.

In the other match, Exiles and Sirens meet in a clash which will probably see the winner making a bold step towards qualification.

In the final encounter today, Neptunes, the only team already assured of a semi-final berth, should be able to consolidate their lead at the top as they face bottom side Marsascala.

The non-competitive match is this week being played tomorrow with Neptunes featuring against the ASA Under 17s. The match starts at 6.30pm.
