I refer to the article in Tuesday’s issue of The Malta Independent regarding the Nazi swastika flag in the event ‘Mosta at war’ held last Sunday.

I am very surprised at the contents of the story which are totally out of context. The event was organised to commemorate the 69th anniversary from the attack on the Rotunda by the German Luftwaffe in 1942. The swastika that was mentioned was the flag the local German army reenactment group had on one of their cars.

We would have been more pleased to bring a Junkers 88 aircraft in the square, the aircraft which dropped the bomb through the Dome but as we did ‘not find one in time’ we had to settle for something less.

For your further information, I have no doubt that the swastika is nothing to be proud of but you know well that the flag was not put there to provoke. Should we have flown it high on a pole in the square then maybe you would have had a point.

I can assure you that tourists enjoyed both the ‘German’ dressed soldiers and their British counterparts in the afternoon and we were surprised how many just jumped off the double-deckers to enjoy the event in the square.

For the 15th August Pyrothecnics Society, this event was a comeback to social activities after the big accident it suffered last 13 August in which it’s secretary, Mario Dimech lost his life tragically. I hope this explains it all.
