Scrabble: 27th National league entering final phase

Malta Independent Thursday, 14 April 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 16 years ago

After three months of intense competition, the 27th edition of the national league, sponsored by Tetley Teas and organised by the Malta Scrabble Club, is now entering its final and most crucial phase.

In Division I, Theresa Brousson is set to claim a record sixth title in a row, which would see her emulate the five consecutive titles won by David Delicata, who is trailing in second place.

The two players will very probably be representing Malta at the World Scrabble Championship in Poland later this year.

Mario Saliba, Nicky Vella Laurenti and Jojo Delia are all vying to take third spot.

In Division II, the race is still too close to call as Mario Seychell has a slender advantage over defending champion Frans Farrugia and Josephine Mayo.

A similar balance prevails in Division III where Marlene Calleja, Carmen Stafrace and, to a lesser extent, Laura Borg are all in with a chance of claiming victory.

All this is happening as the Malta Scrabble Club, in conjunction with CentreStar and under the auspices of the Kunsill Malti ghall-iSport, is gearing to stage two international Scrabble tournaments in the first half of May at the Seashells Suncrest Hotel in Qawra, namely the third European Open Scrabble Championship and the fourth Malta International Scrabble Open.
