Mellieha played the better football throughout the first period but they squandered a lot of chances. Infact in the opening ten minutes their Brazilian striker Fabiano Bassi missed two clear goal scoring opportunities and then they were again close through Nikolay Filipov and Matthew Vella. In the 27th minute Mellieha opened the score through a low shot by Nikolay Filipov following good work by Philip Camilleri with San Gwann coming strongly back to draw level on 38 minutes as a pass by Joseph Chidi Achokwu was finished off by Shaun Vella. The first opportunities after the break belonged to Mellieha as they were close through Huber Vella and Joseph Vella with San Gwann being denied by Simon Gauci off a shot by Shaun Vella. Nine minutes from time, San Gwann got the winning goal as Mauro Busuttil’s cross led to an unfortunate own-goal by Mellieha’s defender Luke Cauchi. In added time San Gwann had a shot by Mauro Busuttil which just missed the target. This defeat means a lot for Mellieha who are now endangering their promotion ambitions.

Mgarr U-Gzira U 2-0

The first period proved to be a balanced affair with Gzira going close after just nine minutes through a Josef Felice free-kicjk which was saved by Claude Carbonaro. Mgarr’s response produced efforts by Matthew Muscat and Russell Marmara which finished just wide and a minute before the break Mgarr’s striker Ismael Cutajar missed an open goal scoring opportunity.

After the change of ends Mgarr were the more incisive team and in the 58th minute they broke the deadlock through Gianluca Theuma from a pass by James Borg. Gzira replied in the 65th minute as a headed attempt by Alessandro Pirrone was saved by Carbonaro, but a minute later Mgarr doubled their lead when a pass by Gianluca Theuma was finished off by Ismael Cutajar. Mgarr continued to push forward and late in the match they were very close through Matthew Muscat and Ismael Cutajar. This result means little to Mgarr who have already been relegated.
