The net ASM Offroad Circuit Racing programme is scheduled for today at the Ta’ Qali race track.

This 13th event of the ASM-New Styles-Poiatti Championships consists of Autocross, Banger racing, Motocross and a Small Ca

r Demolition Derby Race. The event starts at 11am and the Car Demolition is scheduled for 4.30pm

Manuel Muscat, on his Opel Corsa (66) won all the three qualifying heats thus securing his place for the A Class finals. In the nine-lap final A race, Karm Mifsud, on his Imp, made a perfect launch and took the lead while he was closely followed by Christian Galea on a Fiat Ritmo and the Opel of Muscat in third place. The battle for the lead was hard for Mifsud. He drove his car perfectly well and retained his lead to the chequered flag. Galea followed very close to Mifsud but Muscat who was in 3rd place was forced to back a few metres to save his engine as he was experiencing some engine overheating problems.

Mario Scicluna, on another Opel in fourth place, did his best to catch up on Muscat but the chequered flag was shown before he could offer him serious opposition.

In the Class B Autocross finals, brothers Matthew and Malcolm Borg both on Opel cars started in first and third place respectively. Karm Zammit on his Escort Mk4 managed to switch in second place and separate the two Borg brothers to the finish Line.

These three drivers took the lead and demonstrated excellent driving techniques while driving at very fast speeds but only with a few centimetres from each other.

In the Banger races, Tony Spiteri, on his Granada, and Dennis Vassallo, on a Cortina, won one heat each of the three during the day.

Philip Delia lost a front wheel in one of the tight curves and lost his place to Dennis who managed to win the highest number of points in the day’s three heats. Spiteri and Delia placed second and third respectively.

Motocross rider Carmelo Borg won the three heats in Class A on his 250cc Kawasaki. These heats have a 12-minute duration of exciting motorcycle driving on loose surface ground. A mistake on one of the track ramps caused Stefan Dimech to loose his place for David Dimech on his Kawasaki. Both finished in second and third overall.

Gozitan Andre’ Saliba won all the three heats of Class B motocross on his 125cc Yamaha. Second and third places were won by Neil Bonavia (Honda) and Lee Cortis on his Kawasaki 250cc bike.

The ASM Championship charts show that Manuel Muscat is currently leading the Autocross Class A on his Opel. Matthew Borg also on an Opel is leading the Autocross Class B, Tony Spiteri is leading the Bangers, Stefan Dimech on his 250cc Honda is leading the Class A motocross while Andre Saliba is leading the motocross Class B. There are four (4) more events to go and all results can change in each race.

Following the accidents which happened during the 3 February Autocross races the ASM Board of Discipline has expelled Brian Azzopardi for 10 races, Vince and Ivan Birmingham for three and two races respectively, Malcolm and Matthew Borg are expelled for one event each and Alfred Vella is suspended indefinitely until further notice.
