The Malta Employees Sports Association has organised a number of sport activities during the year and the response from the workers has been very encouraging.
Football
Education champions
Football (seven-a-side) is the most popular with more than 25 departments taking part.
Education were declared champions in Division One. It was a merited achievement, being the most consistent team with players of the calibre of Stefan Sultana, Paul Zammit, David Carabott, Julian Briffa and others. The Malta Armed Forces C Team finished as runners up.
There is still some games to be played to decide who are the two teams to be relegated. Enemalta, with an interesting team and also with some experienced players, dominated and won the Second Division title, with the Government Printing Press finishing as runners up and also gaining promotion.
In the Third Division MaltaPost won the title finishing with a good advantage on MRRA (Agriculture) in second place. Both were promoted to the Second Division next season.
There is still some games to be played in all divisions before the start of the Knock Out competition.
Snooker
Mario Cutajar champion
Mario Cutajar of the Malta Armed Forces won the individual snooker competition beating Mario Brincat (also of the Armed Forces) in the final 3 -2.
The final was played at the Anglo Maltese League in Valeltta. It was an interesting and evenly balanced final with Mario Brincat making an excellent break of 86 in the fourth frame. It was a repetition of last year’s final when Mario Cutajar managed to win the trophy.
The teams competition will be played today at the same place with the Armed Forces starting as favourite.
Other activities
The Malta Employees Sports Association organised other competitions. Some weeks ago Education won the Ladies football tournament and the Government Printing Press team was successful in the Over 35 tournament.
The Pool competition, for teams and individuals, is this year being played at the De La Salle College between 6 and 9 May. A good number of teams and players registered to take part.
Tomorrow, another two competitions will take place. Table Tennis will be played at the Gymstars centre in Tarxien, while that of Bowling will take place at the Eden Super Bowl in St Julian’s. After the success achieved last year where more than 50 athletes took part, a 5 Km race is again being held at Salina on 12 May with the first three in the Men’s, Ladies and Veteran Categories receiving trophies.
