St Lucia FC-Mtarfa FC 0-0

The first period was a balanced affair with Mtarfa going close after 12 minutes through a dangerous shot by Arvin Micallef which just missed the target.

In the 22nd minute the Saints were close through Jason Woodhead whose shot was saved by James Borg and three minutes later an attempt by Andrew Sciortino was blocked by an Mtarfa defender.

At the other end Mtarfa were denied by the Saints’ goalkeeper Jurgen Cilia off a Roderick Sammut free-kick and just before the break Mtarfa were again close through Warren Grima.

Five minutes after the restart Mtarfa were very close to taking the lead as a header by Cleavon Mizzi was cleared off the goal line by Saints’ defender Daikon Borg.

Then Mizzi was again very close following a personal effort with the Saints responding through a Daikon Borg free-kick which was saved by James Borg and a Dino Falzon dangerous effoty which was deflected to a corner-kick.

In the 78th minute Mtarfa were denied by Jurgen Cilia off a low angled shot by Francesco Azzopardi and just before the final whistle the Saints replied through a shot by Jason Woodhead which was saved with difficulty by James Borg. Santa Lucia ended their commitments for this season.

St Venera L.- Swieqi U 2-1

Swieqi played the better football early on and after just five minutes they were very close as an angled shot by Eric Sciberras finished just wide off the far post.

Then Stacey Vella was anticipated by the Lightnings’ keeper before he could conclude at goal with St.Venera responding through a Dylan Mercieca crosshot which was saved with difficulty by George Edwards.

In the 20th minute the Lightnings opened the score as a shot by Andrew Hili was finished off by his team mate Dylan Mercieca.

Swieqi failed to react and seven minutes later St.Venera increased their lead through an excellent goal scored by Dylan Mercieca following a personal effort. In the closing stages of the first-half, Mercieca twice went close to increasing the lead for his team.

After the change of ends Swieqi improved their performance and after going close early on through Eric Sciberras, they managed to reduce the arrears on the hour as an Edward Vella free-kick was partially saved by Warren Cuschieri and Swieqi’s defender Francois Mizzi headed in from close-range.

Swieqi sustained the initiative but in the 70th minute it was St.Venera who went close as a shot by Rudi Carbonaro was saved with difficulty by George Edwards.

Swieqi kept pushing forward with St.Venera appearing to be very anxious.

Three minutes from time Swieqi were denied by Cuschieri off an insidious Edward Vella free-kick with the Lightnings going close in a counter-attack through Mark Grech.

Referee: Malcolm Spiteri.
