Zejtun C-Naxxar L 2-0

(Match abandoned in the 93rd minute)

The Corinthians held the initiative for long stretches throughout the first-half and after just three minutes an Edward Azzopardi pass was taken up by Oldi Majtara who was however tackled before he could shoot at goal.

Then Kenneth Abela twice went close with low shots which finiashed just wide with Naxxar losing a clear opportunity with Darren Falzon shooting wide from the edge of the penalty area.

In the 17th minute a close-range shot by Kenneth Abela was partially saved by Julian Azzopardi with the loose ball being taken up by Oldi Majtara whose conclusion was blocked by a Naxxar defender.

Then Zejtun’s striker Adrian Carabott, chased by two Naxxar defenders, lobbed over the advancing Naxxar keeper but the ball finished just over the bar but in the 29th minute Zejtun broke the deadlock as a cross by Ryan Cauchi from the right flank was met by Kenneth Abela who shot in past Azzopardi. T

here were some protests by the Naxxar players. In the 34th minute Naxxar were close through a Darren Falzon free-kick with Zejtun coming back through an Edward Azzopardi free-kick which caused havoc in the Naxxar defence.

Just seven minutes after the restart, Naxxar won a free-kick which was taken by Andre Rocha Da Silva with the Zejtun defence deflecting the ball to a corner-kick.

The corner was taken by Victor Bellia with the Zejtun defence clearing their penaltuy area but the loose ball was picked up by Bellia who shot just wide.

Zejtun’s immediate reply produced two excellent saves by the Naxxar keeper off two successive shots by Oldi Majtara.

Then Adrian Carabott’s shot finished just wide of the Naxxar goal and on other occasions shots by Silvio Sciberras and Charlo Magro were well saved by Azzopardi who kept his team in the match.

On 70 minutes Naxxar gained a free-kick which was taken by Andre Rocha Da Silva and the Zejtun keeper turned the ball past his post to maintain his team in the lead.

In the 87th minute Farrugia was again in action as he brought off a splendid save to stop a shot by Andrea Del Negro.

However in added time Zejtun got their second goal through Adrian Carabott and Naxxar immediately protested, with the referee being attacked by a Naxxar official and the match had to be unfortunately abandoned in the 93rd minute.

Referee: Paul Apap.
