This is my brief reply to Minister Tonio Fenech who wrote: “When will we become Christians of faith and conviction rather than just ritual?” (TMID, 27 April)

Certainly not when you give yourself €500 per week rise while giving just €1.16 per week rise to working people and pensioners, Tonio!

Martin Scicluna’s article (‘Divorce, the Church and our conscience’, TMID, 27 April) reveals the fact that the Catholic Church in Malta has not changed much since the 1930s. I am convinced that within the hierarchy of the local Church, politics play a very important role. There are clerics within the Curia to whom the Nationalist Party comes before the interest of the Church. It has always been like this. Whenever there is a chance to use religion, such as on the present issue of divorce, they grasp the opportunity with both hands to help the PN.

I congratulate and salute the editor (‘On tolerance, sorrow and fundamentalism’, TMID, 27 April) for having the courage to reveal the truth about the Church’s history on marriage and the hypocrisy we have been fed for hundreds of years. If the hypocrisy we are seeing in this debate, coming from the ‘No’ camp could be transformed into electricity, there would be no need to build the power station extension at Delimara!
