The last round of the Premier League is being played between today and tomorrow and the only remaining issue – the second place – will be decided today when Floriana meet Birkirkara.
In the other match on the programme today, Hamrun Spartans face Marsaxlokk.
Of course, this match is being played just for the fixture to be honoured. Neither of the two sides has any further interest this season and it will be the start of their holiday season as from this evening.
For Floriana and Birkirkara they will be playing to determine the runner-up placing. And the match will also serve as a dress rehearsal for next week’s FA Trophy semifinal between the two teams who will be seeking a berth in the final in their efforts to make this season a memorable one despite missing out on the League title.
During the week it became known that the two sides are already assured of their berth in the Europe League next season. This is because Tarxien Rainbows had withdrawn their application for a licence. They therefore will not be able to play even if they win the FA Trophy or finish as losing finalists in the same competition.
Therefore with Valletta in the Champions League, Floriana and Birkirkara will play in the Europa League.
