Victor Osobu Seals promotion for Mosta

Substitute Victor Osobu was the hero for Mosta when he scored two goals in extra time to take the Blues into Premiership football next season.

The match was played in a packed Victor Tedesco stadium with both contingents turning up in large numbers and the cintrast between a more physical Mosta side and the Melita technique was there for all to see.

The game began at a very fast pace with both teams eyeing an early goal. Melita finally came to the fore in the sixth minute when following a corner taken by Micallef defender Gribbon drove the ball over the crossbar after Nicolo Baldacchino headed the ball down following a melee inside the Mosta area.

The game then died down as both teams filled their respective midfield with five players. On 22 minutes a Shead header finished wide while on 35 minutes Melita were unlucky not to have taken the lead.

Just a minute before the break Cornago San Pedro came close when he shot just over the cross bar just inside the box this following a Micallef throw, with the ball being helped into the box by Gribbon.

In the 55th minute Simon Shead came close but was thwarted by Karl Vella Petroni’s header in the area who cleared away before the former Tarxien striker looked odds on to striker the ball home, this from a Ryan Deguara magnificent cross from the right flank.

On the hour mark, Melita came close again when Nicolo Baldacchino played a wonderful one-two with Luca Martinelli, and as the former Floriana striker was ready to pounce on, from nowhwere came Bogdanovic to clear away in time for a corner.

In the 64th minute Gilbert Martin’s magnificent run which left everyone in his wake, and despite beating the goalkeeper with an acute angle, Alinho was in the right place to clear off the line.

In the 75th minute Simon Shead drove the ball wide from inside the area when he should have done better.

Five minutes into extra-time Simon Shead was unlucky when in front of goal his shot hit the crossbar. A minute later Victor Osobu again sprinted to another through pass and this time the Englishman rattled the net with a missile on the run.

Osobu again showed his mettle when he again sprinted following a long pass by William Camenzuli and his cross was met by Simon Shead who easily slotted the ball home.

On 110 minutes Micallef’s header for Melita with Jonathan Debono making a fine save while seconds later Mosta’s Bogdanovic was sent off after receiving a second yellow card.
