Petra Kvitova won her third title of the season after beating Victoria Azarenka 7-6 (3), 6-4 in the Madrid Open final yesterday.
The 18th-ranked Czech player won the first set tiebreaker when Azarenka netted. The players exchanged breaks before Kvitova – who will jump to No. 10 in the rankings come Monday - pushed ahead, helped by 40 winners.
Kvitova secured her first Masters series trophy when Azarenka returned long on the first championship point.
Azarenka will jump one spot to No. 4 in today's WTA rankings despite coming up short in her bid for a third title this season.
