Palermo eliminated newly crowned Serie A champions from the Coppa Italia yesterday earning a place in the final.
Milan seemed to have the upperhand in the first half creating more chances but failed to conclude. With Milan needing to score, as a scoreless draw would have seen Palermo through after the 2-2 draw in Milan, Palermo were a bigger threat due to the spaces allowed in Milan’s rearguard.
Giulio Migliaccio scored for Palermo on the 63rd minute and Cesare Bovo added another 10 minutes later from the penalty spot after Mark van Bommel brought down Illicic when he was one-on-one with Milan’s keeper Abbiati with the midfielder being shown the red card.
Two minutes later, Palermo were also reduced to 10 men after the same Bovo was red carded for a dangerous foul on Pato.
On the 80th Zlatan Ibrahimovic hit the post with a right-foot shot following a good assist by Pirlo.
It was the same Ibrahimovic who found the net four minutes in injury time for a final score of 2-1.
Palermo will play either Inter or Roma in the final. Inter host Roma tonight as favourites after winning 1-0 in Rome.
