The ASM will be organising the pre-last championship 2011 event for the Autocross and Banger racers today.

It is the last event for the Motocross riders in the ASM-New Styles-Poiatti 2010 -2011 Championships. This event is held at the ASM Racing Circuits at Ta Qali and it starts at 11am.

During the final race for Class A, where racing was highly competitive, Karm Mifsud took the lead of the six car start. His lead only lasted for the first lap as Patrick Cassar took the lead and started building a marginal gap on Mifsud who was being challenged by Christian Galea on his Ritmo. Galea passed Mifsud in the following two laps and he decided to try to close the gap on Cassar’s fast Opel Corsa.

Soon, right in front of the main grandstand, Mifsud’s Imp suffered a severe rear suspension problem on one of the main straights on the track which produced a hilarious stop.

Soon after, all have seen Cassar’s Opel on three wheels  approaching the flag marshal’s post. Somehow he lost a rear wheel earlier on the far side of the track. Yet he continued racing his car almost as fast as if he was on all wheels and without creating any danger to himself or other drivers on the track.

Mifsud’s and Cassar’s car failures gave a new opportunity to all the other drivers which resulted in Galea won the race on his Ritmo. He was followed by Manuel Muscat and Pat Cassar on Opel Corsa cars.

In the Class B Finals Godwin Martin made a very good start. He took the lead right to the chequered flag.  He was closely followed by Josef Abela (Opel) and Karm Zammit (Ford) all battling for the first three places. Abela was forced to retire due to engine problems while Ryan Scerri on a Fiesta caught up with the three leaders.

There were lots of action banging in the Bangers races but Dennis Vassallo’s great experience in this field won him the overall highest points. Philip Delia and Mario Micallef won second and third respectively.

The day’s programme included a Mini-Car Demolition. This race organised for cars up to 4 metres in length lasted 18 minutes. The lucky winner was Jurgen Camilleri and Daniel Licari was Runner-up.

The ASM Board of Discipline had to penalise a number of Autocross drivers for their Un-sporty deeds during the 17 April event. In fact, Karm Zammit and Godwin Martin have been suspended from competing in the final race which is to be held on 21 May. David Azzopardi is suspended indefinitely while Andrew Pisani and Matthew Borg are suspended for two race events each. ASM had faced difficulties from some Demolition drivers. Thus, Jason Magro, Marlon Caruana, Larkin Butler and Horatius Caruana all have been suspended from all ASM events until 30 November 2011.
