Malta Independent Thursday, 19 May 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 16 years ago

On Wednesday European stocks gained, snapping the longest losing streak in two months, as basic-resource producers climbed with commodities and Land Securities Group Plc (LAND) reported increased property value. Asian shares and U.S. futures rose.

In Europe the real estate sector topped the gainers' list, supported by a 6.7-percent jump in Land Securities that posted a double-digit rise in full-year net asset value. The company said it will continue speculatively developing offices to fill a central London under-supply that may be more acute than it expected. British Land rose, while Hammerson also gained.

The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares was up after falling in the previous four sessions. The index fell 1% to its lowest close in four weeks on Tuesday

Bank of England policy makers voted 6-3 to keep interest rates on hold this month as the majority warned that tightening policy now could damp consumer spending and hamper the recovery. The Federal Reserve will release its minutes from last month’s policy meeting after the close of European trading.

Antofagasta, the copper producer controlled by Chile’s Luksic family, gained 2% as base metals advanced on the London Metal Exchange. Kazakhmys, Kazakhstan’s biggest copper company, rose 2% and Vedanta Resources Plc increased 1.3%. Eurasian Natural Resources Corp. rallied 3.1% after Citigroup Inc. upgraded the producer of metals in Kazakhstan to “buy” from “hold.”

The selloff in the previous sessions had prompted some investors to grab cheaper stocks, and while the medium-term outlook was more positive, near-term gains could be capped by concerns about economic recovery and the euro zone debt crisis.

Japanese stocks rose by the most in more than two weeks, led by lenders after a report that Mizuho Financial Group Inc. will merge its banks and as the yen weakened. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average rose 1% while the broader Topix index gained 1.1%.
