Raymond Caruana Murder: Prisoner mum on murder case during interrogation

Malta Independent Thursday, 19 May 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Prisoner Kenneth Gafa’, who claimed to have information about the 1986 murder of Raymond Caruana, chose not to talk about the murder case during an interrogation yesterday afternoon, which took place in the presence of Justice and Home Affairs Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici.

The prisoner stands charged with the murder of his former girlfriend, Christine Sammut, who was shot in Mġarr last December.

In a statement yesterday evening, the ministry said inquiring magistrate Edwina Grima and police commissioner John Rizzo also attended the interrogation.

However, the 38-year-old prisoner chose not to talk about what he had declared he was going to do, that is reveal the name of the person who killed Raymond Caruana.

Instead, he only spoke about the situation at the Corradino Corrective Facility and made a request regarding prison privileges. He was told that he would be granted whatever rights he was entitled to, without privileges.

The ministry repeated what it had said in another statement two days ago – that the minister has no legal authority to investigate crime. The minister’s presence during the prisoner’s investigation was intended as a means of light being shed on the murder case of Raymond Caruana.
