Malta Independent Thursday, 19 May 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Following the success of the past events by FM Promotions Ltd. this year as official representatives of JDM Allstars grabbed an opportunity to place Malta on the map and calendar of international Motorsport events.

FM Promotions Ltd., in collaboration with the Malta Drifting Association, will this year be bringing to Malta the first ever European Drift Series.

Malta will be the host for the third round of the 2011 European Drift Allstars Series. This was possible with the solid credible standards FM Promotions Ltd. have built in the past years and the professional approach the Malta Drifting Association is taking towards this sport.

JDM Allstars have chosen Malta after being shown that drifting is growing fast in Malta and that with our limited resources we can be hosts to such prestigious events too.

The JDM Allstars European Drift Series will unfold at the National Stadium Ta’ Qali Parking area and surroundings where a custom track and paddocks area will be setup for this fantastic event.

The venue will host a performance track/arena, paddock area, trade area, food and bar stands, modified cars exhibitions, drift stunt exhibitions by local Team Maximum Lock and also motorsport car exhibitions with the help of the Malta Motorsport Federation.

The Maltese enthusiasts and public will have the opportunity to see the top 16 Drift Allstars European drivers competing here in Malta together with other European drivers and drivers from the Malta Drifting Association.

With Malta being it half way trough of the 2011 Drift Allstars Season, and having seen over past few months and weeks the top drivers feverously prepping and racing there cars for the season Malta will be an exciting round to see.

2010 Front runners Dan Chapman and Jon Calvert the two most promising young drivers to come out of the UK in the past few years will be gunning for top results. Dan Chapman in his newly supported JDM Garage/Drift works S13 will be gunning for the championship as he has come runner up on two occasions now, will 2011 be his year. Jon Calvert the 2010 Rookie of the year and winner of two events was the biggest surprise of 2011 season and his new DD Racing team have been working overtime in the off-season in the redevelopment of his Nissan S13

On a similar note the top three Irish drivers from the 2010 season have signed up. James Deane current 2010 Irish champion has been snapped up by the LBD team in the off season, and after having top results in Formula Drift also in 2010 he may the man to watch. Nigel Colfer is one of the more successful drivers in the JDM /Drift Allstars series with two podiums and with his recent UAE Drift win he may have the confidence to go one step further. Christy Carpenter in his new Yokohama backed S15 may be one to watch as every event he gets more confident, and 2006 European champ Martin Ffrench in his Toyota Altezza.

Top Polish driver Pawel Trela returns in his ASUS backed Nissan S13 with a series of revisions and with his huge performances in 2010 maybe a title contender as well.

Mix in current French Champ Benjamin Bouljes in his GT Radial BMW, top Italian Alberto Cona, Dutchman Lennard Wanders in his Falken Tires and it truly shows we have the premier drivers from the top drifting nations in Europe.

With the two mainland European events, and Malta being one of them it’s also opened the opportunity for the top European drivers to come and compete against the top drivers in the Drift Allstars European series like never before.

Niall Gunn said: “We have been blown away by the response of our two European events and both are oversubscribed with pro driver requests from Italy, Greece, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, France, Hungary, Czech Republic, Norway.

With the print media being really receptive this year JDM Drift Allstars European Series have gained media partnerships with nearly 10 magazines in mainland Europe just showing how fast we are growing, our social awareness has never been busier and that shows as we are the most followed series in Europe. Combine our class leading viral videos and now our extensive European TV coverage on Motors TV Europe 2011 is set to be a landmark year for the sport.”

The action kicked off in Teesside on 25 April for round one, it continues in Sunderland at the Nissan Factory last Sunday and will then come to Malta from 10 to 12 June, followed by France Anneau Du Rhin, France on 24-25 June, then Donington Park England on 16/17 and finishing of at Wembley Stadium, England, on 16/17 September

The Maltese round will also host an amateur cup with the participation of the Malta Drifting Association members together with other foreign guest drivers. This will enable the amateur drivers to acquire more experience and take a chance to make it and compete with the JDM Allstars Top 16.

This is a great opportunity for the Maltese drivers and other European amateur drivers to perform with and in front of the great European champions. This can offer great opportunities to our talented drifting drivers.

The event will also see performance by local Team Maximum Lock, featuring Mark Galea, Christian Bezzina, and Clint Abela in their 3 Nissan Skyline R33’s featuring their newest look, giving the spectators a breath taking drift stunt show following their great performance last year.

The European Drift Series event that will be held between the 10th and 12th June is not just for car or motorsport enthusiasts. The event will provide entertainment and fun for the entire family for a whole weekend with live DJ’s, an exhibition area, and a food court. You can also have your picture taken with these top European Champions and get their autographs in the signing area.

The attending spectators will expect to have a great experience seeing this Drift Series round with a great feel of adrenaline and high speed, the sound of revved engines, the smell of burnouts, the spectacle that such competitions bring with them and of course the taste of a variety of mouth-watering food.
