The Flag-bearers at the Games for European Small States

As is already known, Malta’s flag-bearer at the march-past of athletes at next Monday’s Opening Ceremony in Liechtenstein will be Squash player Bradley Hindle Deguara.

It is well to note that past flag-bearers came from different sports disciplines.

Tennis and judo top the list having provided athletes to this distinct honour on no fewer than three occasions. Athletics follows suit with two, then come basketball, table-tennis, shooting, swimming, gymnastics and now squash.

It is also worth adding that the trio of tennis players who were flag-bearers came in consecutive editions, that is, 1991, 1993 and 1995.

The following is the full list of those athletes who have acted as flag-bearers in past Games for the European Small States (including the forthcoming edition):

1987 – Monaco – Chris Cassar Torreggiani (athletics)

1989 – Cyprus – Ray Muscat (basketball)

1991 – Andorra – Helen Asciak (tennis)

1993 – Malta – Carol Curmi (tennis)

1995 – Luxembourg – Gordon Asciak (tennis)

1997 – Iceland – Jackie Xuereb (judo)

1999 – Liechtenstein – Laurie Pace (judo)

2001 – San Marino – Simon Gerada (table-tennis)

2003 – Malta – Tanya Blake (athletics)

2005 – Andorra – William Chetcuti (shooting)

2007 – Monaco – Angela Galea (swimming)

2009 – Cyprus – Adriana Zammit (gymnastics)

2011 – Liechtenstein – Bradley Hindle Deguara
