Lack Of activity on MSE

Thursday’s trading day saw the Malta Stock Exchange Index ending a marginal 0.04% lower, or just over one point to end the day at the 3,395.044 level. Trading activity was very light as just 18,253 shares changed hands.

Shares in the local retail bank, Bank of Valletta plc, were the volume leaders of the day, opening at the day’s high of €2.801 and closing at the day’s low of €2.800, thereby suffering a marginal set-back of 0c9, or 0.3 per cent. Volume in this equity was light, with 10,753 shares changing hands across eight deals.

Shares of the local telecommunications provider, GO plc, meanwhile opened at €1.360 and added 1c, or 0.7 per cent, to end at the day’s high of €1.370. Here again volume was light with four deals comprising of a total of 7,500 shares.

Despite not being active in yesterday’s session, Plaza Centres plc issue a statement wherein it announced that, during the first quarter of 2011 and the date of the said announcement, its financial position maintained a satisfactory level of performance. Additionally, the company said that it inaugurated its new extension on 18 March 2011, with 85% of the additional area already leased.

The corporate bond market was also quiet with 12 deals being transacted in just five bonds. The biggest mover in the session was the 6.25% Mediterranean Bank plc EUR 2015 bond which shed €2.000, or two per cent, to end the day at €100.500. Two other movers were the 4.6% HSBC Bank Malta Plc € 2017 bond and the 4.8% Bank of Valletta Plc Sub € 2020 bond. Both of these ended marginally in positive territory with the former adding €0.10 to end the day at €101.900 and the latter adding €0.050 to close at €100.55. Two other issues which were active in yesterday’s session but finished the day unchanged were those of 7.5% Hotel San Antonio Plc 2012 and 7% GAP Developments Plc Euro Sec 2011-13 which closed at €101.000 and €99.000 respectively.

Eight issues were active in the government bond market with the biggest mover, the 5.7% MGS 2012 (III) bond, gaining €0.24 to close at €104.460 in light volume of €40,066 nominal across two deals.
