Is it actually possible? Did people actually vote according to their own moral values and not what was imposed on them? It seems to be the case.

Without hoping for too much, the people of Malta seem to have given a clear message in this referendum. The status quo has to go. People will no longer vote for one party or another just because one says one thing and one says the other. This could be the start of a huge change in Malta. In the referendum campaign, the general public and the media have gone to great lengths to scrutinise all that has been said.

One hopes that this new sense of empowerment will continue in the day to day affairs on Malta. The government is no longer untouchable, and neither are ministers and politicians. The people have shown that they are simply no longer willing to sit there and be dictated to. Social media played a large part in this campaign, and perhaps they will continue to do so in holding our politicians accountable for their actions.

Too many have got away with too much, for far too long. This is a new dawn and the two parties better begin to understand the new reality that is unfolding before them. Dare I say it? Yes. We are on the road to becoming European citizens in nature, not only in name.
