The decision taken by the people of Malta in the referendum on the introduction of divorce proves that while we are divided on party and religious lines, we, as a people, have the ability to be compassionate towards others.

Not everyone in Malta needs a divorce, but that did not stop over half of those who turned up to vote from casting a ‘Yes’ vote. For some, it meant only freedom of choice. For others though, it offers new hope. It offers a new life. It offers the chance of a new family. It offers love. It offers a new start. The vote has also proved that the people of Malta, while still heavily influenced by party politics, had the ability to put reason before passion and doctrine and vote according to their own conscience. In the face of such a massive misinformation campaign, the people of Malta are to be lauded for the courageous decision they took.
