Squash: Another Good day for Maltese teams with victories over Monaco

Malta Independent Wednesday, 1 June 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

It was another excellent day - the second in succession – for the two Maltese teams taking part in the Squash competition.

The men’s team beat their Monaco counterparts 4-1 while the women’s team won 3-0.

These were again two very impressive victories for the Maltese teams and it is quite evident that both the men and the women have a sky-high morale after two consecutive victories.

Today they are scheduled to meet Luxembourg and it could be the toughest encounter so far.

In the Men’s match, it was Karl Camilleri who set the ball rolling with a good 3-1 win against Raphael Daney. That was followed by the only defeat. Unfortunately it was Mark Lupi who went down 3-1 against Christophe Ballerio.

Daniel Zammit Lewis then gave Malta a 2-1 lead by beating Jerome Gobert 3-0. It was the turn of Joe Desira to beat Nicholas de Gaillande 3-0 to assure the Maltese team of its win. Brad Hindle Deguara completed the Monaco rout with another 3-0 win, this time against Christian Billard.

In the women’s match, the young Colette Sultana, usually a reserve in the national team, was given the opportunity to gain useful experience by playing in the first match against Fanny Clerissi. She responded brilliantly giving Malta the lead with a comfortable 3-0 win.

In the second match, Annabelle Olivieri Munroe was also superior to her opponent as she registered another impressive 3-0 win, while in the third match, which clinched the win for Malta, it was Diane Desira who obtained a 3-0 victory against Vada Lawrence.
