MOC president Mr Justice Lino Farrugia Sacco said yesterday that he was very pleased with the results being obtained by the great majority of the Maltese athletes at these Games.
He said: “The six silvers we have won so far as well as the two bronze medals and others already assured, are a confirmation of what we have said in the past few days that our athletes are well prepared and have reached their peak at the right moment.
“We now hope that success will turn to gold. I firmly believe that there still remain several instances where we can win gold. We stand a good chance in squash and also in the athletics events. We also expect to win other medals though not necessarily gold. We are still playing in the table-tennis, tennis, shooting, beach volley and judo events.
“What was significant here was the fact that we have seen our young athletes obtaining medals or registering personal bests and even establishing new national records. We have also had occasions where our athletes missed a bronze medal by a whisker, finishing a close fourth. I consider those as good performances and results as well,” he said.
Farrugia Sacco added that we still have to wait till the very end of the competitions to be able to make an assessment.
