While I respect the verdict that the majority of the Maltese said ‘Yes’ to divorce, I feel I followed my conscience and voted ‘No’. I did this because when I pondered deeply in my mind, I came to the conclusion that divorce is not going to change the problems that broken marriages have. On the other hand, let us not forget that bigger problems arise. The children will suffer more the hardships, especially financially. Yes we bow to the majority but let us be frank, there are times when the majority of thought does not reflect the right decision taken. We were proud to be the only EU country without divorce. Now we are “proud” that we joined the club.

Today, countries like the UK, Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Portugal are not better in any way because they embraced divorce.

What about abortion and euthanasia? Are we to begin a fresh new chapter and campaign for this introduction. Will we see them put on the human rights agenda?

Let us realise that the future is not ours to see. Hopefully we will not rock the boat more and drown. Yes for Christian values, No to total secularisation.
