All the four players – two men and two women – were eliminated from the singles tournament yesterday.
It was a big disappointment for the whole Maltese clan – something better had been expected after the results in the teams and doubles events earlier in the week.
In the women’s event, Jessica Pace lost 0-3 to Ni Xia Ling of Luxembourg and then beat Olafs Magnea of Iceland 3-0 to finish second in the group. In the final stage she was beaten 11-3, 11-7, 11-6 by San Marino’s Letizia Giardi and was eliminated.
Lu Pengfei lost her match against Louiza Kourea of Cyprus 2-3, but then beat Chiara Boffa of San Marino and also went through in second place. However, she lost her next match against Sara De Nutte of Luxembourg 11-8, 11-10, 11-10 and was also eliminated.
In the men’s event Daniel Bajada, in Group C, lost 0-3 to Marios Yiangou of Cyprus and Tiso Martin of Monaco and was eliminated as he finished third in the Group.
Simon Gerada finished second in Group A after beating Mattia Berardi 3-1 and losing 0-3 to Luka Bakic. But then he was eliminated after a 2-3 (11-9, 11-6, 5-11, 4-11, 13-11) defeat at the hands of Gilles Michely of Luxembourg.
