Malta’s Kimberley Cassar and Elena Jetcheva had to settle for the silver medal as they lost the Women’s Doubles final against Liechtenstein’s Stephanie Vogt and Katinka von Deichmann.
The home pair deserved to beat the Maltese duo 6-3, 6-3, but Cassar and Jetcheva gave a good account of themselves.
At the end, Kim Cassar said it was a good competition and despite yesterday’s defeat, she was also happy with the silver medal. “This was the first time that I have played with Elena but I feel we lacked experience. We faced strong opponents but still produced a good performance,” she added.
Jetcheva said she would have liked to win the gold medal. “We did not show enough consistency. At times I made mistakes which frustrated me,” she added.
It was the end of the tennis adventure at these Games. Malta had won the bronze medal in the Men’s doubles event thanks to Matthew Asciak and Nicki Camilleri.
National coach Gordon Asciak had hoped for a possible gold medal in the Mixed Doubles event, but Asciak and Cassar lost against Monaco’s duo in the quarterfinal.
