In the recent referendum for the legislation of divorce, the Maltese voted with a loud and clear majority in favour. This majority was bigger than one of the largest majorities ever recorded in Malta, namely the 1998 general election.

Those Members of Parliament who, despite this clear majority, still intend to vote against this divorce law in Parliament should think twice before casting their vote.

Voting according to their conscience and against the explicit will of the majority of the people does not make sense after holding a consultative referendum. They would be simply letting the vast majority of the electorate down.

I suggest that those parliamentarians who vote against the divorce legislation in Parliament should be boycotted by the same electorate in the forthcoming general election.

They are no longer worthy of our trust because, as the saying goes, ‘once bitten, twice shy’.
