Malta Independent Friday, 10 June 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Valletta won the double after they have finished in top place in Section A. The game was watched by a very large crowd at the Luxol Ground.

The Citizens were by far the better outfit throughout the whole 80 minutes by creating much more occasions than Pieta.

Pieta forged ahead after only two minutes with a choral move between four players. Cain Attard served Rodney Refalo with a cross in the area who scored with a low shot past Valletta keeper Yenz Cini.

Valletta’s response was very immediate as they mounted three actions. Samir Arab served Mohammed Zarrouq in the area and Pieta keeper Dylan Cacciatolo foiled him with a timely sortie.

A flag kick by Matthew Thorne created havoc in Pieta’s area but somehow the ball was cleared to safety and Samir Arab served Isaac Zammit with a through ball, the latter returned the compliment to Siraj Arab in the area but he failed to make contact with the ball.

Cini then saved a free kick by Zachary Gatt after Terence Agius was fouled outside the area and at the other end Cacciattolo saved a free kick by Samir Arab after Zammit was fouled outside the area. Minutes later he turned the ball to a corner from Samir Arab’s free kick after Thorne was fouled on the left flank.

In another action by Pieta, Attard served Ryustemov in the area and a defender cleared the ball to a corner.

In the 33rd minute Valletta equalised. Thorne was fouled on the left flank; Llyweln Cremona floated a high ball in the area from the free kick which was partly cleared and Thorne headed in from the rebound.

Two minutes before the break Valletta scored a second goal when Siraj Arab dribbled past an opponent on the left flank and served Zarrouq with a cross in the area who scored with a header.

Valletta created the first action after the restart. From a free kick, Cacciattolo had to fist the ball away which came in the path of Thorne and the goalie was forced to dive and save his rebound to a corner.

In another action by Valletta, Thorne served Zammit in the area but a defender cleared the ball to a corner.

Valletta insisted and Samir Arab headed slightly out from a Thorne corner.

Pieta came close to equalising on two occasions. Agius served Xuereb in the area and he missed the upright by inches from his shot and Bonello served Refalo in the area but Cini saved his effort in two attempts.

In the last action before the end, Glenn Cassar dribbled past two opponents and after entering the area Cacciattolo saved his close-range shot.

After the game Youth FA Chairman Fr Hilary Tagliaferro presented the Trophy to Valletta captain Yenz Cini.
