An article in the media said that no decision has been taken regarding Star’s remains. Surely one cannot consider a burial in some field. Star has attracted too much attention and has become a symbol. We cannot let her death be in vain, to be forgotten as soon as the furore abates.

What’s to be done? The obvious thing would be to set up a bronze monument over her grave in some easily accessible public place (like a public garden or roundabout?) This would be a first for Malta − it would be a message that we are not the barbarians we were made out to be, that there is a growing awareness of animal rights. Remember, Star’s tragedy attracted world attention and international eyes are upon us to see how we will finally dispose of Star’s remains. Who knows, such a monument might even attract tourists − Edinburgh has its statue of Bobby and Japan has its Hachiko. Let’s have our Star!

Costs? Should be minimal! A small grave with a statue and a plaque relating Star’s story and dedicated to all animals, especially those abused. Donations can be given (and I am sure they will pour in). Besides, if we can afford to finance a controversial phallic monument that ended up causing embarrassment, then why not a monument that would send a message loud and clear to all Maltese and all mankind?

Many animals have been abused before but are now forgotten! Let us draw the line now! Let’s have a monument so their story will never be forgotten!
