The Maltese Olympic Committee celebrated the success at the Games for European Small States last week in Liechtenstein with a party at the Palace Hotel in Sliema.
Also present for the occasion were the Minister for Education Ms Dolores Cristina, Parliamentary Secretary for Sport Clive Puli and PL spokesman for Sport Chris Agius.
They all congratulated the athletes on their success and wished them even more success in the future. They all agreed that the athletes and the MOC had made Malta proud with the results achieved.
MOC Director of Sport and Chef de Mission Mark Cutajar said he was very proud of all the athletes, even those who had failed in their quest to win a medal.
He said that following the Liechtenstein success – the best ever result away from home - now was the time to start thinking about the next adventure – the London Olympics – where an Olympic medal should be Malta’s primary objective.
He went on to thank the athletes, the officials, the directors of the MOC, especially his team that included Julian Pace Bonello, Dr Lucianne Attard and Adele Muscat, as well as the families of the athletes. “Without their support, dedication and commitment, all that was achieved would not have been possible,” he said.
MOC President Mr Justice Lino Farrugia Sacco reiterated his comments at a press conference in Liechtenstein that the athletes were a treasure for Malta. He showered praise on all of them for having shown total commitment towards Team Malta’s cause. He added: “You all made us proud with the results and your performances. It was really encouraging to see a good number of youngsters among the medal winners and among those who achieved some outstanding results.”
He also said that he was already convinced that the next edition of the Games in Luxembourg will see Malta’s athletes obtaining even better results than they did last week.
