Sciberras, Effiong May become Birkirkara targets

Malta Independent Sunday, 12 June 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Marsaxlokk and Malta midfielder Gareth Sciberras and team-mate Alfred Effiong, a Nigerian striker, may become a target of Birkirkara FC.

Coach Patrick Curmi, who has signed for Birkirkara from Marsaxlokk, has already started training the team because of their forthcoming fixtures in the Euro Cup and later in the Europa League.

Curmi told The Malta Independent yesterday that Sciberras is the top name on the transfer market. He is thought to be the most sought after player with Sliema, Floriana and Hamrun also showing an interest, apart from Birkirkara.

But the Stripes coach said he feels he has an advantage as he knows the players well having been their coach till recently.

Curmi also said that it is still too early to make moves on the transfer market. He has to talk to the new committee to see what the players out of contract will be doing.

He said he would prefer to hold on to the squad which played last season with a few touches and, of course, some new foreign players.

Joe Zammit president

The club yesterday decided to appoint Joe Zammit as the new president of the club at the new committee’s first meeting.

He succeeds Karm Galea who did not contest this year’s election. The latter had succeeded Victor Zammit two years ago.

Dr Adrian Delia is the new vice-president. He will be occupying the post held by Joseph Gauci during the past seasons.

Ivan Muscat was named as the new club secretary while his assistant will be Jason Deguara.

Other appointments included Charles Micallef as treasurer and Ivan Mizzi as his assistant. Carmelo Calleja is the club director.

Dr Adrian Delia was elected as the MFA Council member, Manuel Bezzina was appointed as the MFA club delegate and Peter Busutill was appointed as the second MFA club delegate.
