In the past days more than 15 Maltese table football players headed towards Bologna for the third Major in the calendar of the FISTF. This tournament served to confirm the great results and positions obtained in April and also to see the first Maltese player to lift a Major trophy in the Veterans Category.
Mifsud wins Veterans title
Five Maltese players took part in this category. They were Joseph Mifsud (Fiamme Azzurre), Alfred Fenech, Jason Pisani and Vincent Joe Mifsud (Valletta SC) and Patrick Pace (SS Lazio). All, these except for Fenech qualified from the first round in group of 3. Fenech was unluky to have in his group well experienced Titi Giaux (Belgium) and Marco Caviglia (Italy).
In the following stage, Vincent Joe Mifsud (Valletta SC) had to face well experienced Marco Lamberti (Reggio Emilia) and also captain of the Italian national squad. During the match, Mifsud showed a lot of enthusiasm and although he was the underdog of the situation, he managed to give a hard time to Lamberti. Mifsud ended the match 3-3 and it was only through a golden goal that Lamberti qualified to the next stage and headed for the final where he had to meet another Maltese player, namely Joseph Mifsud.
In the final, Mifsud was in arrears, but he managed to overturn the deficit to his favour.
This was another successful result for Mifsud, following the title of the Veterans in the English Grand Prix.
Melanie Fenech in the
semis of the Ladies
In the Under 19 section, the dream to see Angelo Borg and Darren Bezzina in the final together, vanished at the quarter finals. Bezzina (Hamrun TFC) who showed great techniques on the day, also attracted the interest of an Italian club who asked a lot about the Maltese youngster. Bezzina lost his quarter final to Zambello (Italy) for the score of 3-2. Borg (Piraeus Lions) on the other hand had to face the strenght of Emanuele Lo Cascio (Italy) who managed to take Angelo to the shoot out and beat the Maltese player who won 6 tournament out of 6 prior to this one.
In the ladies, Melanie Fenech (Bormla SC) managed to reach the semi final and it was the player from Italy, Giuditta Lo Cascio who was too strong for the girl of Cospicua.
