The comment articles by Stephen Calleja (“Nationalist liberals moving to Labour”) and Josanne Cassar (“Get ready folks. We’re in election mode”) in The Malta Independent on Sunday of 12 June seem to forget that disgruntled Nationalists can always consider voting for Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) rather than simply abstain. Or have they forgotten that AD actually exists?

A lot of voters who toy with the idea of voting for AD often end up dismissing this political party because they can’t shake off the feeling that they’d somehow be wasting their vote. It seems that this line of reasoning is endemic since AD have never managed to surpass the figure of 5,000 ‘number one’ votes in any general election since the party’s genesis.

Now imagine if all these cheesed off voters were to take the plunge and give them their vote in two years’ time! Sure, they might be political minnows tainted with the usual defects one associates with politicians, like for example overheated egos, but at least they’ve always been consistent with the electorate on divorce and the environment − which is more than can be said for the PLPN.

Now that we’ve exorcised the divorce bogeyman from the national psyche, wouldn’t it be great if one day we could see a third party in Renzo Piano’s House of Character?

Come on! How about telling us one Sunday what they think about AD and their chances of making it one day in the future?
