Football - Michael Galea Leaves Stripes

Malta Independent Sunday, 19 June 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Birkirkara star striker Michael Galea did not renew his contract with the Stripes after a brilliant 14-year career.

This was announced by Michael Galea in an interview published on the Birkirkara FC website. Michael Galea played 334 matches for the Stripes scoring 177 goals in the process making him the third ever best scorer in Maltese football after Stefan Sultana and Gilbert Agius.

In his interview Michael Galea thanked the Birkirkara committee for understanding his decision which was not an easy one. Galea wished the Stripes the best for the future and promised he will remain a Birkirkara supporter.

Michael Galea started his career with Melita and joined the Stripes in season 97-98. In season 1999-2000 he helped the Stripes win their historical first ever Maltese title.

Michael Galea had a short spell with the National team where he only played five matches making his debut on 8 February 2000 against Andorra.

Meanwhile Birkirkara also announced yesterday their second signing for next season, Spanish goalkeeper Jorge Feblas Mora. This will be a welcome return for the Spanish goalkeeper who was the Stripes two seasons ago, helping them lift their third title.

Rumen Galabov joins Sliema

Sliema Wanderers yesterday announced that they have acquired the services of Rumen Galabov. Champions Valletta were also interested in getting his signature.

Galabov is the fourth foreign signing by Sliema for next season. The Wanderers under the guidance of Danilo Doncic are aiming to restore lost pride next season, following a rather disappointing one, finishing in the relegation pool for the second part of the season.

The 32 year-ol Bulgarian is an all-round utility player and can play in various roles. He joined the Wanderers form other Premier side Marsaxlokk.

Rumen Galabov played for Bulgarian side Beroe Stara Zagora, Valletta, Pieta Hotspur, and Hibernians before his spell with Marsaxlokk.
