Brian Magri, Michelle Vella Wood were the winners of the Malta Urban Jungle Middle Distance 113km Triathlon held recently.

Over 20 athletes and nine teams took part in the recently held Malta Urban Jungle Middle Distance 113km Triathlon.

Covering a distance of 113km consisting of a 1.9k swim, a 90k cycle and a 21km run, athletes had to battle heat and strong winds in a race that took participants between four and seven hours.

Brian Magri and Michelle Vella Wood won the male and female categories respectively, with Vella Wood making a great comeback following the birth of her first child, finishing the race in 4hrs 42 mins 10 seconds and 6 hours 5 minutes 34 seconds respectively.

The race, which is in its fifth year, saw a total of 15 athletes taking part for the very first time. A number of athletes also teamed up and took part in a team relay, which saw a swimmer, a cyclist and a runner team up to cover the distance.

The relay section was won by Team A which was made up of Kristen Laufey Stenadottir (Swimmer), Emmanuel Bezzina (Cyclist) and Johan Galea (Runner) taking the team honours covering the distance in 4 hours 25mins 10 seconds.

“The purpose of this event is twofold” explained Charlie Demanuele, Race Director and Organiser of this event “The first is to encourage athletes to experience Triathlon and the second is to give more seasoned triathletes a taste longer endurance races, which could potentially prepare them for races such as Ironman”.

This event was made possible through the support of Urban Jungle, Al Fresco Restaurant, Maxifuel, Olympic Sports Nutrition, The Cyclist, Organic Food Bar and VJ Salomone Marketing Limited.

The organisers thanked Euchar Camilleri from B’Kara St. Joseph Sports Club, Manuel Azzopardi from the Malta Triathlon Association, Oswald Spiteri from Joseph F. Spiteri & Co. (1927) Ltd., and all the helpers that were present during the day to ensure the success of this event.
