As a former driver with more than 40 years’ experience, I now have to be driven to various places on both islands, especially in Malta, and I am totally disgusted as well as terrified when seeing a considerable and ever increasing number of drivers during the summer season manoeuvring their vehicles with just one hand, the right arm resting comfortably on the open window and the free hand dangling out, enjoying the rushing wind caressing their idle hand as if they are the only drivers on the road.

How really abominable and horrendous is their complete and utter ignorance that this selfish practice can easily be confused or interpreted as an overtaking sign or a right turn at a junction by other drivers, especially by foreigners accustomed to disciplined and driver-friendly standards and manners.

It sounds unbelievable but it really is true that often the worst offenders are some police officers, ambulance, truck and bus drivers, in that order, whom one expects to have correct driving standards.

It is never too late for the transport authorities, police and wardens to make a concerted effort to clamp down on this widespread abuse, particularly on their own professional kin, irrespective of the number of stripes or pips the drivers have.

This seems to be the only practical way of ensuring safe driving and good conduct on our overcrowded roads.

Incidentally, this positive approach should be given the full support of the leaders to start collecting substantial and easy revenue for the public coffers capable of relieving the excessive strain on the yearly budget account.
