Football: Tony Bezzina – A true gentleman

Malta Independent Tuesday, 28 June 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

I will be doing an injustice if I were not to write, on behalf of all the genuine supporters and the Paolites in general, to thank Is- Sur Toni, this gentleman, a ‘chip of the old block’.

To be at the helm of a Premier League Football Club for 33 years, is by no means a joke or an easy task.

I am proud to have known Tony for the past 52 years. We were brought up together, went to the same college and spent our childhood in the same village.

Tony would never dream to ‘defect’ his one and only Football Club at heart Hibernians and even more so, his home village. He was born, brought up and still lives in Paola, something which, most unfortunately, I did not succeed in doing myself. Perhaps my dream will come true before my time is over.

Tony always kept a low profile, down to earth, genuine and sincere. No wonder that he is truly loved by all the Paolites regardless whether they are football followers or not.

We are all proud of you, Tony.

May I also take this opportunity to congratulate both Mario Muscat and Andrew Cohen for taking the right decision in signing new contracts with the club. Most unfortunately, not everyone does!!
