Without even wanting to dig up recent ghosts, it is safe to say that Malta was thoroughly, emotionally and physically exhausted after the referendum.

The honoraria issue was still raging and reached its height after the result, and everyone is pretty worried about what the future holds in store for all of us. We’ve also had a few jitters, what with Libyan fighters landing in Malta and a human tragedy taking place just a few hundred miles south of us. Freakish explosions and weird crashing waves also jolted us, just when we thought we were winding down for summer.

This year, summer will take longer to kick in. Part of this can be attributed to the realisation that the economic environment does not forgive anyone for slacking, even if you would rather be at the beach. It also comes from the fact that we have recently learned that the divorce debate will drag on until a vote is taken later than originally intended – now on 25 July.

But enough of the moaning harbinger. The weather has finally become consistently sunny, and although we still have a lot of work to do before taking our August breaks, there is finally a great excuse to forget it all, just for one night, and party.

The Isle of MTV is back. When the Isle of MTV first came to Malta a few years ago, this newspaper was the first to applaud the move, but there were doubts in many minds over whether the festival was sustainable.

It was, and it still is. This year, although the lineup was not familiar to the ‘not quite that old yet’ bracket, some of the biggest stars around will once again gave us a special show.

As the saying goes, all work and no play do indeed make Jack a dull boy. While the Isle of MTV might not be everyone’s cup of tea, let’s just enjoy some positive vibes for a little while. Everyone needs it.

We always paint black and white in Malta. Yes, things are tough and yes, the people are frustrated and very rightfully so. But let us look around and realise that in many ways we are lucky, we all still get on, people still come here on holiday, joblessness is manageable and investment is still coming in.

This should not blind us, and is no excuse for anyone. We are merely saying that things could be worse and we should sometimes be more positive. So, while hoping that all those who attended the show yesterday had a good time, let us hope that there are many more Isle of MTVs. This one certainly came at a good time.
