On Pentecost Sunday the Society of the Holy Name of Jesus celebrated the 78th National Congress in the parish of Senglea under the auspices of Archbishop Paul Cremona O.P. It was the fourth time that the parish of Senglea has hosted this event. The archpriest, Rev. Canon Joe Grech who had shown great enthusiasm that the Congress be held in his parish, gave the opening welcoming speech. This was followed by Chev. Stanley Mangion, the National President of the Society who spoke, among other things, about the six anniversaries that the parish of Senglea is celebrating during this particular year. After the speech given by the National Chaplain Fr Joe Vassallo O.P., the Congress was brought to an end by an interesting talk by the Archbishop who spoke about the need of a new evangelisation and explained what this entailed. During the Congress there was time for prayer and for singing songs of praise. The Salesian youth presented a beautiful mime about forgiveness and man’s co-operation with God’s grace.
Prior to the Congress, the Society of the Holy Name of Jesus organised a teaching mission throughout the parish visiting schools, the old people’s home, shops, political clubs, band clubs, wine bars and religious movements. The members of the Society experienced the joyful feeling of seeing that the word of God was so enthusiastically listened to and embraced all who heard it. Special masses were organised at different times and there was also the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament.
The Society of the Holy Name of Jesus would like to thank all who contributed to the success of this spiritual event, particularly to Can. Joe Grech, to the owners of shops and bars, to the presidents of clubs, to Radju Kottoner, to all the speakers, to all those who offered their prayers and to all who took part in this 78th Congress. May the Lord continue to shower His graces on all those who participated in this spiritual event, but particularly on the people of Senglea, a parish so dear to all the members of the Society of the Holy Name of Jesus.
