Waterpolo: Malta Face Poland with qualification already guaranteed

Malta Independent Friday, 1 July 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Malta’s national waterpolo team ends its committments in the European Championship qualifying Group A with the match against Poland in Szcieczin today, already sure of a place in the next round.

This came by virtue of Malta’s win against Turkey at the National Pool last Tuesday.

Malta beat Turkey 8-7 with a steady performance that saw them recover after falling in arrears in the first session. Malta’s goals against Turkey were scored by Steve Camilleri (3), Michele Stellini (2) and one each from Karl Galea, Andrea Bianchi and Jerome Gabaretta.

Alan Borg Cole also distinguished himself in goal with a string of fine saves.

Malta thus face Poland without any pressure. Malta had beaten the Poles 7-3 at Tal-Qroqq already. Poland also lost twice to Turkey and are bottom in the Group.

After today’s match, Malta will have to focus on stiffer challenges in the next stage which will be played in October and will feature waterpolo giants like Spain, Germany, Romania and Greece.

Malta’s squad, under coach Sergio Afric and his assistant Karl Izzo, is made up of the following players:

Alan Borg Cole, Nikki Lanzon, Jerome Gabaretta, Paul Privitera, Timmy Sullivan, John Soler, Steve Camilleri, Jordan Camilleri, Clint Debono, Karl Galea, Andrea Bianchi, Michele Stellini and Ryan Coleiro.
