Malta Independent Saturday, 2 July 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Band of the Hampshire Constabulary will be visiting Malta in July, when it will be presenting a series of concerts. More commonly known as The Hampshire Police Band, the band has been in existence for over 115 years, taking its present name when the local police forces were amalgamated in 1967. The Hampshire Police Force serves a very large area on the south coast of England, and includes the cities of Portsmouth, Southampton and Winchester, and the Isle of Wight. The original Portsmouth and Southampton Police Forces were formed in 1836.

The Band is a military style wind band, and is formed from serving and retired officers, members of the police support services, family and friends. With the full support of the Chief Constable, it is a completely voluntary organisation which works within the community through its concerts and charity work., raising many thousands of pounds in the process.

The Band’s 45 musicians will be under the direction of Captain Peter Curtis BMus (Hons), PGDip, LRSM, AMusTCL, Royal Marines, who, after active service in Afghanistan, is now serving at the headquarters of the Royal Marines Band Service. The band will be presenting a varied programme of music, including marches and classical arrangements, pop classics, film and big band arrangements, in various localities. The concerts are open to the public and are mostly free of charge. The Hampshire Police Band will be performing in Malta courtesy of the Commissioner of Police, Malta.
