Wrestling: Summer Tournaments under way

Malta Independent Wednesday, 13 July 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 16 years ago

The first of a series of summer tournaments was held at the Naxxar Boys Secondary School in which a number of wresters from the cadet and schoolboys divisions took part in five different weight categories.

It was encouraging to see a good number of parents and other relatives watching this tournament that proved to be very interesting.

All bouts were keenly contested in the best sporting sprit. The young wrestlers came from the Naxxar Boys Secondary Team and the Qawra Wrestling Club.

Mark Galea (Naxxar Boys Secondary Team), winner of the Cadet 69kg caught the eye and had to go all out to beat Sebastian Zammit of the same club who also gave a good account of himself. Definitely this bout was the best of the tournament.

However, as was expected, Gary Giordimaina (Naxxar Boys Secondary), in the 45kg category for schoolboys, showed that he was the best wrestler of the tournament. This young wrestler is improving with each tournament and he is being groomed for international events.

Other category winners were Gary Genovese (Qawra Club), 32kg schoolboys, Andrew Grech (Naxxar Boys Secondary), 32kg, and Isac Frendo (Naxxar Boys Secondary), 69kg schoolboys.

Shaun Caruana (Qawra Club) beat team mate Gary Genovese in an interesting exhibition bout.

Maltese wrestlers David Zammit and Adam Vella will be attending a training camp with the Italian national team in Rome next month, thanks to the Italian federation.
