Alien Invasion

Malta Independent Saturday, 16 July 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

I wonder whether the impact of planting so many exotic plants all over Malta in roundabouts and central strips has ever been studied. I am a keen fan of everything which is Maltese and I try my best to plant typical Maltese and Mediterranean plants in my front garden. However, since the roundabout in front of my house was covered in seasonal exotic flower plants, some escaped and invaded my front garden.

My concern is that the same is probably happening in the Maltese countryside. Use of species that are inappropriate for the Maltese landscape should be curbed and controlled.

Although some may argue that Mediterranean shrubs and creepers are not as colourful, they are an important characteristic of the Maltese landscape, equally beautiful and they are also easier to tend to and more sustainable.
