Medical Students and summer jobs

Malta Independent Wednesday, 20 July 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

It is important that somebody focuses on the current scenario when it comes to finding a summer job, after spending a whole year studying.

This is my second year of medical school and also my second summer trying hard to find a job, which seems like it is going to be as the previous year; unsuccessful.

The thing is, I go through the wards in our hospital and they are full of foreign people employed as nurses. Some of them are given full training because they come from countries where medical resources are minimal. Language and culture barriers are common issues as well.

Most of the medical students are eager to be part of the MDH workforce during the summer months, as this will help them understand the patients and the medical system. It will help us experience different roles within the hospital services, while having the opportunity to earn some money during the summer.

Everybody has the right to work and gain some independence, even if it’s just for the summer months. It is a good opportunity to relieve the overworked staff. We can carry out various jobs including clerical work, constant watch with critical patients and more. The hospital will benefit with such a proposal as well, because students will be better prepared both holistically and clinically.
