The Under 16 Women National team obtained their first victory in the FIBA Europe Division C championship in Andorra.

After losing the first game against Andorra 66-23 on the opening day of the competition, Sandro Farrugia’s girls came back with a fine display against Wales to win the game 64-26. This means that Malta will now avoid the last place in the group and therefore will face the third team of Group B.

Malta opened strongly to get a good 13-6 lead in the first session. As expected, Wales reacted in the second period; however, Malta managed to increase the lead at half time to 25-16.

After the break, the Maltese players went out aggressively and built a comfortable lead at the end of the third quarter - 42-20 - with the Welsh only able to score four points. T

he final session was still a better affair for the Maltese girls especially in the last six minutes with a run of 16-2 to win the game 64-26.

Maria Bonett and Julia Xerri were Malta’s best scorers with 16 points each while Martina Darmanin was the top rebounder with 11 rebounds. Julia Xerri had nine steals and Claire Ciantar had eight.
