The Malta Weightlifting Association recently organised the first club competition at the Cottonera Sports Complex. Four clubs took part.
Cottonera Club competed with 11 lifters and gained 2,143 points placing it first. Second placing went to Nobel Club with 1,129 points gained by seven athletes. Third place was won by Starmax Club who competed with five athletes and gained 1,030 points. Falcons Club came fourth with 843 points.
During this competition 14 national records were broken by Destiny Vella Busuttil of Starmax: seven of them were in the 63Kg category Youths and the other seven in the 63 Kg category Juniors.
This was the largest scale competition ever to be held Malta. It produced very encouraging results. Five of the athletes taking part were female and 15 were under 16s.
Best male athlete was Clint Grech of Cottonera Club who gained 249 points and was followed by Matthew Muscat Inglott of Nobel Club by 248 points. Third place went to Rodmar Pulis with 246 points.
Best female athlete was Nicole Gatt of Starmax with 116 points followed by Rodianne Balzan of Cottonera Club by 105 points.
Third was Destiny Vella Busutill of Starmax with 104 points.
These results will be sent to the relevant authorities abroad so that they compete in the international tournament organised by Oceana and sponsored by KZC.
The success of this competition was made possible by the help of the ‘Kunsull Malti ghall-Isport’ and the International Weightlifting Federation. Also involved in its success were a lot of volunteers who willingly gave their support.
The competition was run by the president of the association, Jesmond Caruana, and referees Alfred Ellul Mercer, Simon Brincat, Ramona Camenzuli and Gayle Caruana.
