Energy Compensation

Malta Independent Thursday, 4 August 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

The studies conducted by MRA on energy prices have shown an increase in prices of 3.2%. This means that the households will have to pay more for the basic consumption of energy. The government’s decision to compensate families with low income and others on social assistance by giving a one-off energy bonus was positive, but more families should have been included. On the other hand, we believe that the method of calculation for the price of energy should be transparent.

Many families are doing their utmost to reduce consumption, but the fact is that basic consumption is an essential resource in everyday life. It is unfair that other families with a low income and pensioners are denied the right for energy compensation due to ‘means testing’. The Government should adopt a policy that protects basic consumption, while penalising wasteful practices. Żminijietna stresses that it would be fairer if the Government gave a one-off payment to every family retroactively from 1st October 2010. Increase in energy prices should also be reflected realistically in the Cost of Living Adjustment.

Government should also increase investment in other sources of energy on a national level and include wind and solar energies. Using roofs of public buildings and schools for the installation of photovoltaic panels should form an integral part in the national plan for renewable energy production. The Government should also invest in gas for electricity generation.
