Following their positive string of performances at the Games of the Small States of Europe in Liechtenstein, the Malta beach volleyball duo Alison Borg and Gertrude Zarb participated in the ‘Trofeo De Farfala’ held at the La Capanine Beach Volley Stadium in Catania, Sicily. A total of 14 teams took part. The team was invited to participate following the collaboration of the MVA with FIPAV Sicilia.
On Saturday the girls played and won a series of matches which saw them through to the semi-final.
In the semi-final on Sunday the girls played against Roberta Mosca and Gisella Sergi. In the first set the Maltese duo were unsettled and lost 21-18. In the second set however they pulled themselves together to win 21-8. In the decisive set Borg and Zarb won a close encounter 17-15.
In the final match, they played against Alessia Incognito and Denise Carmeci. Both girls play in the Serie B league in Italy. Incognito’s hard services where crucial to their game and although the Maltese duo fought hard the Sicilians won both sets 21-19.
The girls finished second overall giving yet another very good account of themselves. Gertrude Zarb was also awarded the “Best Attacker” of the tournament.
