The sport of beach soccer is growing extremely fast and there is a massive interest in it as can be seen by the large crowds attending this year’s tournament in Birzebbuga.

This was the gist of the message delivered by Malta Beach Soccer Association President Mark Marlow during a press conference held at the Le Meridien Hotel and which was also attended by the world famous Italian beach soccer player, Roberto Pasquali.

Roberto Pasquali spoke about the importance of the sport which is growing in popularity. He also recalled his early beginnings in 2001 adding that there was a considerable difference between actual soccer and beach soccer with some players who came from professional football not succeeding with the beach element due to the sand.

Pasquali also spoke about the forthcoming World Cup which will be held in Ravenna adding that Italy was one of the favourites although Russia and Brazil were also top contenders.

MBSA Association President Mark Marlow said that negotiations were currently ongoing with the MFA to create a national beach soccer team which can participate in international competitions.

Responding to questions by journalists, Marlow said that beach soccer was intended to be played by the beach and Birzebbuga was an ideal location.

John Montanaro, from Gillette, said it was a privilege for the company to be sponsoring the Beach Soccer tournament.
